Upper Conduit Slipline Pressure

Upper Conduit Slipline Project: Pressure-Rated CIPP Rehabilitation in Salt Lake City

Project Overview

Salt Lake City’s Upper Conduit is a critical water transmission pipeline constructed using multiple concrete pipe types, including prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP), reinforced concrete cylinder pipe (RCCP) and steel cylinder concrete pipe (SCCP). As part of ongoing infrastructure reliability efforts, Insituform Technologies, LLC (ITL) was contracted to deliver a pressure-rated cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) solution for a section of the conduit requiring structural rehabilitation.

Project Challenges

In January 2020, the City selected ITL to install a pressure-rated CIPP liner within approximately 560 linear feet of 48-inch PCCP. With previous positive experience using CIPP in gravity sewer applications, the City chose this approach specifically to:

  • Maintain the maximum internal diameter of the existing water transmission pipeline
  • Minimise disruption and avoid full pipe replacement
  • Ensure the long-term structural and hydraulic performance of a key potable water asset

The rehabilitation needed to be completed ahead of seasonal increases in water demand, requiring a reliable and timely installation.

The Solution

In late April 2020, ITL successfully installed and pressure-tested an InsituMain® epoxy-resin pressure liner, returning the pipeline to service in time for heightened springtime water use.

The pressure-rated CIPP solution provided:

  • Structural renewal of the host PCCP
  • Preservation of internal diameter
  • A corrosion-resistant, leak-proof composite pipe
  • A trenchless installation method suitable for large-diameter potable water infrastructure

The project demonstrates the adaptability of InsituMain® for pressure pipeline environments and the effectiveness of CIPP as an alternative to open-cut replacement.

Client Feedback

“We have used cured-in-place pipe lining on gravity sewer projects with great success. This was a primary reason for selecting CIPP to rehabilitate this section of potable waterline. Insituform worked closely with us through installation challenges for a successful project.”
