In July 2026, a section of a historic masonry combined sewer was successfully rehabilitated in the Walle district of Bremen, close to the city’s Überseestadt development area. The project presented several engineering challenges due to its location within a densely populated residential neighbourhood with mature trees and limited parking availability, making conventional open-cut replacement impractical. To minimise disruption to residents, traffic, and the surrounding infrastructure, the sewer was rehabilitated using a trenchless Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) solution.
Rehabilitation Details
Insituform supplied a custom-manufactured CIPP felt liner for the 78-metre rehabilitation section. The pipeline featured a long sweeping bend and, more significantly, a transition in diameter from DN 840 to DN 1100 within the installation length. This complex geometry required a precisely engineered transition liner, specifically designed to conform to the existing masonry sewer while ensuring a continuous structural rehabilitation. Despite the challenging alignment and varying cross-sections, the installation was completed successfully, restoring the structural integrity of the sewer while avoiding extensive excavation and preserving the surrounding urban environment.
This project demonstrates the versatility of Insituform’s CIPP felt liner technology in addressing complex rehabilitation requirements, including curved alignments and diameter transitions. By combining bespoke liner design with trenchless installation techniques, a durable, cost-effective, and sustainable rehabilitation solution was achieved with minimal impact on the local community and existing infrastructure.
Installation Setup
The installation was carried out together with the experienced team at Swietelsky-Faber Kanalsanierung GmbH, Leipzig. To support the process, the Insituform conveyor belt system was used throughout, ensuring controlled liner handling and precise positioning during inversion. The project was completed in five days.
