Pipe Lining vs Pipe Replacement: What’s the Difference?

Once hardened, it creates a new, strong inner wall that restores the original pipe’s structure and function.

What is Pipe Replacement? 

Pipe replacement is the traditional method of repairing pipes that are too damaged to be restored. It involves excavating the ground to reach the existing pipe, removing it completely and replacing it with a new one. Depending on the pipe’s location, this can require digging up roads, pavements, gardens or commercial premises, making it a more invasive process overall. 

Replacement is typically recommended for pipes that have collapsed, are heavily deteriorated, or are made from outdated materials like clay or cast iron that no longer meet performance standards. 

 

Key Differences Between Pipe Lining and Pipe Replacement 

  1. Installation Approach
    Pipe lining is carried out above ground with access through manholes or small openings. The original pipe stays in place while a new lining is formed inside it. In contrast, pipe replacement requires excavation, access to the full length of the pipe, and manual removal of the existing system.
  2. Disruption to Surroundings
    Because pipe lining is trenchless, it causes little to no surface-level disruption. Roads, pathways and landscaping remain intact, and projects are typically completed faster. Replacement involves breaking ground, which can impact traffic, property access, and surrounding utilities.
  3. Time and Labour Involved
    Pipe lining is generally quicker. In many cases, installations can be completed in a day, reducing time spent on site and the number of workers required. Pipe replacement is labour-intensive and often takes longer due to excavation, removal and backfilling.
  4. Cost Implications
    While pipe lining may appear more expensive at the outset due to materials and technology, the savings in time, restoration and reduced disruption often balance the cost. Replacement may have lower material costs, but higher labour and surface reinstatement expenses.
  5. Longevity and Suitability
    Pipe lining reinforces the existing pipeline and improves flow. It extends the operational life of the infrastructure significantly. Pipe replacement provides a completely new system, which may be necessary when existing pipes are structurally unsalvageable. Choosing between them depends on the condition and type of damage.

 

When Should You Choose Pipe Lining? 

Pipe lining is best suited for pipes with minor to moderate wear and structural issues. It is ideal when: 

  • The pipe has cracks, leaks or root intrusion but is still structurally sound. 
  • Excavation would be costly, difficult, or disruptive. 
  • Speed and minimal disruption are priorities. 
  • The pipe runs under roads, buildings, or landscaped areas.
